March 6, 2016 marked the 59th anniversary of the independence of nation of Ghana from British rule. Each year the Embassy of Ghana in Washington DC invites Ghanaians in the Diaspora to take part in an event they call the Interfaith Thanksgiving Service. The theme of this year’s event was “Investing in the Youth for Ghana’s Transformation”.
What a spectacular event it was. Upon entering the venue your eyes were immediately captivated by the colors of the Kente cloths worn by both the men and women. What struck us the most is how many families were present with their little children. Even the babies dressed in traditional outfits.
It became clear right away that we would be on our feet most of the night. We danced we clapped, we celebrated with Ghana.
The key point of the message from the Ambassador, His Excellency Lt. General Joseph Henry Smith was that Ghanaian youth are the Present and the future of Ghana. The leadership of Ghana should know that the Youth are watching and they should lead by example. He went on to say that Ghanaians must remain patriotic and optimistic about the nation of Ghana.
Also during this event the Ambassador inaugurated the Council of Ghanaian Interfaith Alliance (COGIA) which it’s vision is to advocate and establish a Ghanaian Interfaith alliance in the United States of America with the view to leading, educating and advocating the expression of individual religious faith and core values of the Ghanaian Diaspora Community.
