The Gaen Festival – A Tikar Tradition

The Gaen festival has taken place in Bankim for hundreds of years. It is the mother of the Nguon festival which takes place in Foumban.

The Tikar were the great warriors of the Adama Region. They conquered many lands and were able to expand their territories.

The Gaen festival promotes the culture and history of the Tikar people. In addition the festival was started as a way to celebrate the strength of the Tikar warrior.

During this festival there is a “foreign” woman who sits on the throne of the King. The King comes and chases her away from his throne and claims it for his own.

The festival takes place in early December every two years. It is a wonderful tradition.

The festival will take place again in December 2018.
